A new study titled “Heatwaves Trigger Severe Surface Ozone Pollution in India: Regional Hotspots, Trends and Health Effects”, first-of-its-kind, published in npj Clean Air (Nature Portfolio), by Prof. Jayanarayanan Kuttippurath of CORAL, IIT Kharagpur and P. Sangeetha of KUFOS, Kochi, shows that heatwaves in India are not only extreme temperature events but also episodes of severe air pollution that significantly increase mortality risks. This is the first comprehensive analysis on this topic.
Heatwaves, long associated with heat stress, dehydration, heat exhaustion, heatstroke, and cardiovascular strain, are now found to also drive sharp increases in ground-level ozone, which is a toxic pollutant harmful to the lungs and heart.
