Mission

Establish a Multidisciplinary, Globally Relevant Research Framework that Integrates Regional Focus (Indian Subcontinent and Surrounding Oceans) with Insights of Board International Significance.
Integrate observations, field experiments, and advanced modeling, including AI/ML, to explore complex Earth system dynamics.
Investigate interactions among the ocean, rivers, atmosphere, land, and cryosphere, and their cascading impacts on ecosystems, climate, and human well-being.
Align research with key UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and international frameworks such as the Paris Agreement and the UN Decade of Ocean Science, thereby strengthening global cooperation for climate resilience and sustainable development.

The vision of CORAL is to be a leading global hub for interdisciplinary research and innovation in earth sciences, addressing critical challenges such as climate change, extreme weather events, and environmental impacts. By integrating advanced computational techniques, data assimilation, and field studies, CORAL seeks to contribute to sustainable development and informed policy-making for environmental and societal resilience.

In doing so, we also bring a vital regional perspective by examining the unique challenges of the Indian subcontinent and its surrounding oceans, where climate impacts are both immediate and profound.

CORAL is more than a research centre at IIT Kharagpur—it is a platform that unites discovery, education, and collaboration. By forging partnerships across disciplines and borders, we aim to address both regional needs and global imperatives, contributing meaningfully to the shared fight against climate change.
